what happened on 11 sept.2001 should have never happened,one of

Thanks for being here.  Each of you has, in your own special 
way, eased my pain over the past year.  I've enjoyed the 
debates, the closeness, the camaraderie.  I haven't been on much 
lately. 3-d life has taken me away from my internet 
friends...that's a good thing, though I do miss you all.  I'll 
be checking in today to see if any more of our old friends stop 
by.  But, I wanted to take just a moment to tell you all that

of what goes on in the world.  One year later and we remember 
the fallen victims and heroes of the 9/11 tragedies.  One year 
later and we are still fighting the war on terrorism.  It is 
hard to believe that one year ago today we were all in front of 
the TV or logging on to the computer to find out exactly what 
happened.  Trying to find out who and why.  Trying to find 
answers to our sorrow and anger.  I pray everyday for the 
victims and families of the victims of that horrible day.  I am 
in awe of the resilience of our country after the attacks.  I am 
inspired by the world-wide support that we received from 
countries like England and Canada.  I am proud to call myself an 
American and live in this great country of freedom.

2001: A Towering Day in History." I mean banners that

of this seem to be getting out of hand over there?

Could I possibly just say that simply "Hi UK Citizen" would have

U know you, I don't know for sure as to whether you've posted in 
a more serious manner under a different handle. Perhaps you 
could clarify that point for me, as I'm not exactly famed for my 
detective work on here. If, you've got a moral objection to the 
political slant of this board or have a view on things that 
related to 9/11 but perhaps was not listened to, again could you 
state as to whether that's the case or not.

From my point of view, a forum like this should be an 
opportunity for people to speak their minds. The criteria I use 
and continue to use here, are simply these.

1. I respect ANY individual's right to voice their opinion. That 
does not 'automatically' mean I agree with or respect their 
opinion, but simply and 'far more importantly' respect that they 
have the RIGHT to say it. That basic level of respect is 
therefore built in, in the way I conduct myself on this board. 

2. If you or I, or anybody were to object, to what a particular 
contributor to this board states, based on a moral objection, 
then simply stating WHY you object on moral grounds should be 
sufficient. People then know where a person stands on an issue.

3. Arguing to the point where it that becomes personal, well...I 
just don't see the point. Simply formally agreeing to disagree, 
is where ideally things should be left.

In the full knowledge of how you conducted yourself here thus 
far, I know other board members would be saying that I'm wasting 
my time. Perhaps so..but I'm obliged to try becuase I don't wish 
to make pre-judgements about anybody. You maybe homosexual, bi-
sexual or straight for all I know. It's not who or what a person 
is that matters to me, it's purely the validity of what they say 
as far as this board is concerned. Their view carries equal 
weight.

I've not taken you for an idiot, I'd appreciate if you'd show me

I see, Well unlike most other things, that these religious 
freaks do, this one was really just spite. They half assed it, 
thought that they would get a response they didn't get. It is 
all very typical behavior of a strung out drug addict. Deluded

much to see he was ripped on heroin and had been for a long

I didn,t get a chance to come on here yesterday.
My condolences to all Americans.
I attended a memorial at Ottawa city hall.
Even though I did not lose a friend or family member in the 
attacks.
At the ceremony I found myself feeling much grief that must have 
been locked up inside.
I don,t think the grief was just for the people who died on 9/11 
only.
The loss of my sense of security and peace are what overwhelm me.
We must take steps to make sure that the world is a peaceful 
place for future generations.
 The footage of the planes hitting the world trade center.
Had the same impact on me as it did a year ago.
I don,t think anyone could ever be desensitized to such a 
terrible site.

09/12/2002 : "President sends in war command" 

President sends in war command Military action against 
Saddam Hussein came dramatically closer today with 
significant movements by American and British armed 
forces. 

As President Bush prepared to address the UN today, he 
set up a war command in the Gulf. American General 
Tommy Franks is leading a 600-strong contingent of senior 
staff from US Central Command Headquarters in Tampa, 
Florida, to Qatar, from where he is expected to command 
operations against Iraq. 

The British 7th and 4th Armoured Brigades and the HQ of 
the Ist UK Armoured Division - all based in Germany - are 
set to begin operations in the desert within two weeks. 

In a further significant move, key reservists in the British 
armed services have been told to expect to be mobilised at 
the end of the month for possible operations in the Gulf and 
Iraq. 

The specialists, including medics and signallers, have 
been warned to expect their mobilisation papers in two to 
three weeks. 

The moves came as President Bush was set to warn the 
UN they must act against Saddam, while Tony Blair was 
meeting Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith and the Liberal 
Democrats' Charles Kennedy to seek their support for 
military strikes before an emergency recall of Parliament. 

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon told the BBC's Today 
programme that Iraq must be given "a clear ultimatum with 
a sting in its tail" for complying with United Nations 
demands on weapons inspections. 

President Bush, who has already been presented with the 
"plan for Iraq" by General Franks, will warn the UN that it 
must take action to enforce its resolutions on Iraq or "risk 
irrelevance". 

Mr Bush warned in his 11 September anniversary address 
in New York: "We are joined by a great coalition of nations to 
rid the world of terror. And we will not allow any terrorist or 
tyrant to threaten civilisation with weapons of mass 
destruction." 

He added: "This nation has defeated tyrants, liberated death 
camps and raised this lamp of liberty to every captive land. 
We have no intention of ignoring or appeasing history's 
latest gang of fanatics trying to murder their way to power. 

"Now and in the future, Americans will live as free people, 
not in fear, and never at the mercy of any foreign plot or 
power." 

In London, a draft timetable drawn up by No10 would see 
the Cabinet meeting on Monday week, 23 September, to 
discuss Iraq. The following day, the Government would 
publish its long-awaited dossier spelling out the threat 
posed by Saddam. 

Mr Blair would unveil the document with a statement to the 
Commons, launching one or two days of debate. 

Meanwhile, substantial British forces are now expected to 
be ready for operations in the Gulf by the end of November, 
according to military sources here. 

By then the Army could have a small division in Kuwait and 
adjoining areas ready for action, which could begin in late 
November or early December. The 7th and 4th and the Ist 
UK Armoured were the main British ground units in 
Operation Desert Storm in 1991. 

Heavy British and American air attacks on ground defences 
in Iraq are now being seen as an opening shot in the 
campaign to force Saddam to give up his weapons of mass 
destruction, or face the consequences. 

Ostensibly this week's raid on a large airbase 250 miles 
south-west of Baghdad was to knock out ground-to-air 
missiles and radar threatening British and American aircraft 
policing the no-fly zone in the skies of southern Iraq. 

But according to Major Charles Heyman, senior analyst at 
the Janes Defence Group: "It was much bigger than 
anything we have seen recently and it seemed aimed at 
taking out the command and control for the air defences for 
most of western and north-western Iraq." 

Further air attacks will attempt to "blind" Iraq's early-warning 
radars in the area from which Scud missile attacks were 
launched on Israel in the Gulf war of 1991. 

With radars destroyed, it would be easier to land teams of 
special forces, from the SAS and US Delta Force, to hunt 
down mobile Scud launchers. 

Equally significant were the attacks by US Navy planes from 
Gulf-based carriers to knock out Iraq's Chinese-made 
Silkworm surface-to-surface missiles in silos round the 
southern port of Basra. 

It is thought that Basra is likely to be the first objective in a 
serious allied ground campaign to curb or oust Saddam. 
Troops landed from helicopters and landing craft would 
seize the two airfields and the port as the main supply base 
for any allied push on Baghdad. 

It is now expected that the 1st UK Armoured Division, 
equipped with the latest Challenger2 tanks, would move 
from Kuwait as a leading element of the land operation. At 
the same time, Royal Marines would join up to 20,000 US 
marines now expected in the area by mid-November in an 
amphibious operation. 

The plan strongly resembles that used to oust Saddam's 
forces from Kuwait in February and March 1991. If anything, 
British forces will have an even more prominent role this 
time and more than 30,000 men and women from all three 
services are likely to be involved. 

The armoured thrust by tanks and heavy artillery will be 
matched by a force of assault troops being dropped by 
helicopter or Hercules transport aircraft. 

This might be commanded by another scratch divisional 
headquarters of Royal Marines and Airborne Forces from 3 
Commando Brigade and 16 Air Assault Brigade. They are 
likely to be joined by at least two light infantry battalions. 

Commanders have been particularly impressed by the 
recent performance of the 1st Battalion the Royal Anglian 
Regiment in Kabul this year, and currently the 1st Battalion 
the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment in Kosovo. 

The move on Basra would be the first phase of a "bite and 
hold" campaign in Iraq, which some military planners now 
believe could last throughout most of next year. But British 
and American commanders believe they have the forces, 
skills and will to take Baghdad itself if necessary.

Nice article! For the past month the airstrikes in Iraq have 
seemed to have a definate purpose. The wipeout of the Chinese 
missle center was the clincher. The path is being cleared. I 
just lost it, laughing uncontrollably last night at Bill Clinton 
on the David Letterman show. He basically agreed with every step 
Bush has taken regarding Iraq. Clinton stated it will take a 
week to completly control Iraq! Letterman was so shocked at the 
time frame he asked him to repeat it!

LOL!! Butt be fore-warned, when you go into production the 
E.P.A. will rip you a new well! In the meantime I'll shift my 
non-existant stock portfolio into anything related to beans.

we have recently heard that during the Gulf War,Chinese 
missle techs were killed trying to repair missle sites that 
allied forces had either destroyed or damaged during 
previous strikes.

It's been a while since we've spoken at some length so it's nice 
to know you're still around. I do recall the positive vibe your 
words brought to the board and I took onboard their thoughtful 
message. In essence, learning to truly appreciate the things we 
all take for granted, that don't have monetary value but are

like that, tend to do just that, one imagines.  

Don't know about you but, I still have real concerns about 
Afghanistan itself. I know the U.S troops were hoping to have 
been long gone from there before now, with Turkish troops now 
having taken over from the British in patrolling Kabul. The 
Taliban and al-Qaeda (not to mention the warlords) are still in 
my reckoning a formidable threat to the country itself and it's 
hopes for gaining a democratic future. All the supposedly good 
and the great at the U.N. didn't follow through on their 
pledges. I remember every leader worth his salt wanted to be 
seen with the U.S. President at the Whitehouse (photo op's and 
all) waiting to write a blank cheque for America politically and 
Afghanistan monetarily, in the weeks following the attack. I 
hoped for the best, but sure enough most drifted away when most 
needed. Kofi Annan to his credit, raised the issue again at that 
crucial U.N. meeting today. Before 9/11 I have to admit, I 
didn't know just precisely where Afghanistan was! The more I 
read of it's history and the downward spiral it's been on in the 
last 30 years especially, the more I realised just how pivotal 
that country is in the scheme of things. If enough resources 
could just be invested by the world community, that could go a 
long way to ultimately undermining the Opium supply problem in 
the medium to long term, in the West and elsewhere. Less 
drugs..less crime kind of thing. Not to mention giving a two-
fingered salute (a Churchillian salute in reverse) to any 
doubters who'd cried foul that the U.S and Britain are being 
imperialistic. I realise it's naive idealism, as most of what I 
ramble on about usually is, but I feel it's something that the 
coalition forces that went into Afghanistan (admittedly to 
achieve a means to an end, rather than it being an end in 
itself) would be something to be truly proud of. One can easily 
imagine another group of fanatics setting up there in ten years 
time, only far better prepared for any invasion from the 
outside. Not a pleasant prospect. Mr.Karzai truly has his work 
cut out. I know you'd join me in wishing him the best of 
luck.       

Im trying to decide if a "OH WELL" or a "LOL!" is in order. I 
remember reading something on that recent attack saying the 
Chinese missle site that was taken out was recently built, but 
that didn't make sense. Probably more likely, repairs to 
existing assets, as you say.

Apologies, don't have much time to post at present. Just a quick 
thought on what you mentioned. Those fanatical clerics. What 
they say does piss me off, but I think they're more of a 
nuisance and a joke, than anything else. Didn't seem to be too 
many there at their rally in central London the other week. They 
know they're being watched by the security services. In the U.K. 
at present it's fairly low key. Mostly monitoring movements of 
those with extreme views.

I can't check the runes as Merlyn's done (Hi Merlyn!) but at 
this stage my gut feeling is that al-Qaeda is trying to isolate 
the U.S. by attacking it's interests home and abroad. Any attack 
on Britain I think tactically, would from their point of view be 
a mistake. That would only serve to further unify public opinion 
on both sides of the Atlantic fairly rapidly. As I say, at least 
for now I'd guess American facilities abroad are under greater 
threat than us in the U.K at this present time.

  It has been a while and indeed we are seeing the east unfold 
in a way foretold and tragic. Perhaps in the end of Saddam's 
reign we will see an and to the 20 year war. I really feel that 
we will use a sledgehammer to kill a fly, but my insight tells 
me that indeed Saddam is seeing the end of his road. Faced by 
odds beyond his worst expectations, he may well just disappear. 
He has caused his own country to despise him and the only people 
who would support him would just as soon kill him and take his 
place. 
  The U.K. is having to deal with the fall out of such liberal 
thinking as to let these extremists teach their deadly dogma in 
the west and on the soil that your countrymen fought and died to 
protect. There are new limits being set and if the "good muslim" 
can't get over the fact that there is prejudice against him, 
perhaps he needs to stand up to his Mullah and face this dark 
side of his religion down.

I listened to Koffi Annan's and President Bush's speeches at the 
U.N. meeting, and in my view both had merits in what they said. 
Like many others I'm still undecided as to what the most 
appropriate action is to take against Saddam Hussein. The London 
based International Institute of Strategic Studies issued a 
report last week stating officially what the state of play was 
in regards to the weapons he has at his disposal at this point 
in time. Most of it I think was fairly common knowledge anyway. 
Everything except nukes. Everyone's waiting for this U.S. 
intelligence dossier to be made public. In trying to persuade 
the world's public to back military action, any vital 
information contained therein unfortunately immediately 
compromises the sources that obtained that information. It also 
let's Saddam Hussein know just how much outside agencies know or 
do not know about his regime's activities. A double-edged sword. 
But I'd still like to know what's in that dossier.

Nobody here was going to catch me criticizing the character and 
suitability of George W.Bush as a U.S. president in the 
immediate wake of the attacks last September. I'm not a fool. I 
didn't then, and I'm not going to criticize now. On balance, in 
the circumstance I don't think anybody in his position could 
have done any better. Okay, so he's not got the oratory skills 
of Bill Clinton, but he gets his message across well enough. I'd 
describe his presidency as being 'workman-like'. Not bad, not 
great, but just right for the circumstances. I remember those in 
the U.S. were baffled some years ago and asked "Maggie 
Thatcher!..oh yeah strong leader, say why'd you guys throw her 
out of office?" In a nutshell, one reason was that, this was the 
person that was once quoted as saying "there's no such thing as 
society". From that read, 'social conscience not required'. It's 
all a matter of perspective.

So, from my perspective, such as it is, Mr.Bush put his case 
well at the U.N. Though many at the gathering may not have 
agreed with his arguments, along with those who didn't agree 
with your President...simply because he's an American, they can  
(and they know it) no longer avoid the fact the U.N. as a multi-
lateral institution is fact becoming an irelevance.

I remember watching a B.B.C. correspondant's travels in Iraq 
filmed not long ago. Attempting to investigate first hand just 
what the reality was in Iraq. What he saw, at least in the areas 
that he visited were market stalls overflowing with foodstuffs. 
No mass hunger apparently, again, at least not at first glance. 
What become clear was that the U.N. and their representatives in 
Iraq had in fact conceded authority over to Saddam Hussein over 
control of U.N. funds in regards to the purchase of food and 
medicines. Assuming nothing's changed since, he apparently has 
full control over how any food or medicine (and it's a fair 
amount) given by the U.N. in good faith, is distributed. The 
upshot is, Kurdish doctors are left to get by with cancer 
treatment drugs that can barely fill one standard kitchen 
refridgerator. The contents of that ONE refridgerator have to 
cater for approximately....1.5 Million Kurds. I also recall 
seeing a young Kurdish toddler being carried by her mother. A 
scruffy haired little cherub, maybe two or three years old. Her 
liitle head flopped onto her mother's shoulder out of weakness, 
quietly sobbing. She was obviously extremely ill..and you got 
the uneasy feeling she wouldn't make it. Her mother looked at 
the camera for a moment and just burst into tears and held her 
tight. I don't mind telling you now om/cf that fucking cut me 
up. Boy..did it.

If we, that is Britain, U.S., France, Canada...whoever, decide 
for certain to go in take Saddam Hussein out, I want it done for 
the right reasons. I'm not a warmonger. If at all possible I'd 
want the military build up which Hussein knows is happening in 
earnest now, to back up any U.N. resolution(s) which is/are 
eventually finalised in the weeks ahead. I hope a madman sees 
sense. What a contridiction. But, if he doesn't then I guess 
it's time to take him out and get the job done this time. This 
is coming from somebody who thinks war should be the very, very 
last resort, and an option not taken lightly.

It's a huge gamble politically and possibly militarily depending 
on the mindset of the Iraqi people, and a huge gamble if nothing 
is done. Who'd want to be George W.Bush right now. Not me...and 
that's why I salute him.

The two American pilots involved with the deaths of 4 Canadian 
soldiers in Afghanistan.
Have each been charged with 4 counts of involuntary manslaughter 
& 8 counts of assault.

I agree on the U.N. Either they take the bull by the horns and 
start showing some fortitude and progress, or the whole world is 
dumping its money into a scam. How the U.N. organization regains 
some respect is beyond me, but no country seems to take them 
very seriously. Modern Isreal, the child, was somewhat raised by 
the U.N. and they ignore sixty some U.N. resolutions, why would 
a nutter like Saddman listen? The U.N. seems useless in its 
current form.

I am not nearly as gung-ho for an attack on Iraq as I was in the 
aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. Anger eventually fades 
somewhat and a more coherant big picture has replaced it. I 
still think Saddam must go but I do not want America to come 
across as a bully. Childishly simple maybe, but I've never liked 
bullies. I want my America to keep to the high road so we never 
have to bow our heads over something not thought completly 
through if that option is available as it is now. I watched the

These pilots were from the Illinois Air National Guard, I think 
I mentioned that before. A article in our local paper about 
month after this incident contained a interview with a former 
I.A.N.G. pilot. He totally ripped the commanders of this unit 
for not maintaining discipline and lack of training and 
expressed his amazement that F-16's haden't crashed in Illinois. 
The pilots are on the hook now, but where are their illustrious 
leaders? And I still say, what in the hell are Fighter jets paid 
for my state taxes doing in Afghanistan when Im getting hit up 
on federal taxes for that service already! I want 'em here 
protecting? my state.

Was wondering, any decent FM radio stations you'd recommend in 
the Illinios area. I ask because I can pick some up via the 
internet. Listened in to a Chicago radio station, only to find 
another Brit doing the show. Typical. Howard Stern's station 
isn't available yet, they've only just gone over to FM. I'd be 
quite curious to listen to him and one other DJ that's on the 
schedule.

I don't listen to much radio anymore except the local stations 
that are all music and commercials, blah. Chicago radio use to 
have some real characters. Steve Dahl's radio program nearly got 
myself and a innocent (but laughing) co-worker fired on the spot 
years ago when the boss (very Catholic) heard what I had on the 
radio!! The FCC gave Dahl a lot of vacations. Mancow was a 
Chicago radio fixture but again, Im not a big radio listener. 
Chicago radio changes so fast now, I haven't a clue.

There are only a few of us here that pay any attention to the 
news,and would have any knowledge of the word daisy-cutter.

Its funny in a way, so many people I know are so concerned with 
whether or not Osama is alive or not. Does it really matter? To 
think the death of Osama bin Ladin will somehow end terrorism is 
a warm, fuzzy thought but not realistic. There are plenty of 
others with the same or worse mindset that would love to be the 
second coming of Osama. For my money, he's bin dead dead since 
last December.

I just came to this site to see what it was about and um ive 
been reading all this stuff on arabs and crap...and Habibi, Im 
sorry but uh Arabs did do sumthing to us..They crashed 2 frickin 
planes into the Trade Towers and You excpect us not to be mad? 
They also tried to hit the White house but fortunitly some guys 
on the plane didnt want their president dead so they gave up 
their own lives to save the presidents! They also crashed a 
plane into the Pentagon! Yes we are mad about this and You 
cannot think we r crazy for being mad about Arabs killing over 
thousands of people in this horrible tragidy! We will stand up 
for our Country and NO arabs can take our faith away!
